Montreal Staircases

Montreal is famous for its exterior staircases giving access to the upper floors of duplexes and triplexes. The web has many sites providing explanations for the origins of this type of architecture. One site, more official than others, is A Nous Montréal, a Montreal municipal web site. Other sites may tell somewhat different stories.

The photographs in this gallery are but a small sample of the variety of exterior staircases in Montreal and were taken in a number of different neighbourhoods. I have selected only those with two staircases because of the mirroring or partial-mirroring effect of many of the paired staircases.
